IKEA BESTA Assembly Time — TV Unit & Storage

4 min read · Based on real buyer data

The IKEA BESTA is the go-to living room storage system — clean, modular, and deceptively complex once you add doors and drawers. Assembly time ranges from under 2 hours for a simple base unit to 4+ hours for a large combination with doors and legs.

What adds the most time to BESTA

Push-open doors
BESTA push-open doors use a pressure mechanism that requires very precise hinge placement. Getting them to open and close smoothly takes patience.
Soft-close hinges
Each soft-close hinge has two adjustment screws. With 4+ doors, alignment can take 30–45 minutes alone.
Legs vs plinth
Attaching the leg frame to multiple base units requires careful alignment before you can load the unit with anything.
Wall-mounting
Wall-hung BESTA looks great but adds 45–60 minutes for finding studs, leveling, and mounting the rail securely.

Tips for BESTA assembly

Build all carcasses before any doors
Get every cabinet body assembled, joined, and leveled before you touch a single door or drawer front.
Level the base unit perfectly
BESTA doors will not align if the cabinet itself is even slightly off-level. Use a long bubble level across the full width.
Adjust hinges before tightening
BESTA hinges have 3-axis adjustment. Attach them loosely, get the door hanging perfectly, then tighten everything.
Mark hinge positions with tape
Before drilling, mark hinge hole positions with painter's tape. Easier to see and less chance of mistakes.
