IKEA HEMNES Assembly Time — Desk, Dresser & Bed

4 min read · Based on real buyer data

HEMNES is IKEA's solid wood series — heavier and more durable than most IKEA furniture, but that weight comes at a cost during assembly. Here's the breakdown by piece.

Why HEMNES takes longer than other IKEA series

Solid wood is heavy
HEMNES uses solid pine, not particleboard. The panels are significantly heavier than equivalent MALM or BILLY pieces.
Tighter tolerances
Real wood expands and contracts. Dowel joints in HEMNES can be tight — never force them dry.
More steps than it looks
The clean Scandinavian aesthetic hides a lot of hardware. The 8-drawer dresser has nearly 100 individual fasteners.

Tips for HEMNES assembly

Never force solid wood dowels
If a dowel feels too tight, check alignment first. Forcing it can crack the wood. A tiny bit of wood glue helps it slide in cleanly.
Protect surfaces while assembling
Lay a moving blanket or cardboard on the floor. Solid wood scratches more easily than laminate during assembly.
Two people for bed frames
HEMNES bed panels are genuinely heavy. A solo bed assembly risks dropping a panel on a finished floor or yourself.
Don't rush the drawers
HEMNES drawers need careful track alignment. Install one, test it fully, then move to the next.
