IKEA EKET Assembly Time — Cabinets, Combinations & Wall Mounting

4 min read · Based on real buyer data

EKET is IKEA's modular cube cabinet system — mix and match sizes, stack them, mount them on the wall. Each individual cabinet is a quick build. Where people lose time is the wall-mounting step, which takes more precision than the cabinet assembly itself.

What takes the longest

Getting the wall rail level
The hanging rail determines whether your entire arrangement sits straight. A rail that's even 2mm off shows up clearly once the cabinets are on it. Take 10 extra minutes here — it's the most important step in the whole process.
Stud finding and anchor selection
EKET cabinets aren't heavy individually, but a full wall arrangement can be. If you're not hitting studs, you need the right wall anchors for your wall type (drywall, plaster, concrete). Budget time for this step before drilling.
Laying out a large combination
For 4+ cabinets, the planning step — deciding what goes where, marking positions, checking clearances — adds more time than most people expect. Sketch it on paper first.

Step-by-step: single EKET cabinet

  1. 1Sort hardware and cross-check against the parts list.
  2. 2Insert dowels into one side panel. Slide any internal divider shelf onto the dowels.
  3. 3Attach the second side panel, then add top and bottom panels.
  4. 4Tighten all cam bolts once all panels are connected.
  5. 5Slide the back panel into its groove. Nail at each marked position.
  6. 6Check that the cabinet is square by measuring corner-to-corner. Adjust before the back panel nails dry.

Wall mounting tips

  • Find studs first with a stud finder — don't guess
  • The hanging rail needs to be perfectly level — use a long spirit level, not a phone app
  • For drywall without studs, use toggle bolts rated for the combined weight of all your cabinets plus their contents
  • Mount the rail at the top of where you want the arrangement to sit — cabinets hang down from it
  • For combinations wider than 3 cabinets, add a second person to help align and hang

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to assemble IKEA EKET?
A single EKET cabinet takes 20–30 minutes to assemble. If you're building a wall combination with multiple units, expect 30–90 minutes total depending on how many cabinets and whether you're wall-mounting them.
Is the IKEA EKET hard to assemble?
The individual cabinet assembly is easy — EKET is one of IKEA's simpler builds with few parts. The difficulty comes from wall mounting: getting multiple units level and properly anchored takes more time and precision than the cabinet assembly itself.
Do you have to wall mount IKEA EKET?
EKET can be used freestanding on a surface or wall-mounted. Larger combinations should be wall-mounted for safety and stability. Single units used as side tables can stand alone.
How do you keep IKEA EKET from falling off the wall?
EKET uses a hanging rail that screws into wall studs or uses appropriate wall anchors. The key is to locate studs first, use the right anchors for your wall type, and level the rail carefully before hanging the cabinets. Once the rail is solid, the cabinets are secure.
