How IKEA Cam Locks Work When Taking Furniture Apart
4 min read
IKEA cam locks are the round disc fasteners you see in almost every IKEA frame. They connect horizontal panels to vertical ones by grabbing onto a bolt that runs through the adjacent piece. They are clever on assembly. On disassembly, they are one of the easiest things to destroy if you do not understand how they work.
How a cam lock works
A cam lock has three parts: the bolt (the threaded metal pin that sticks out of one panel), the insert (the brass or plastic cylinder pressed into the second panel), and the cam itself (the disc that rotates to grip the bolt).
When you tighten a cam lock during assembly, you rotate the disc clockwise — typically about 180 degrees — until the cam grips the bolt head and draws the two panels together. The cam stays under tension as long as it is rotated in the locked position.
To release it, you rotate the disc in the opposite direction. That is it. The cam swings away from the bolt, the tension releases, and the joint separates.
Where people go wrong
The cam lock slot — usually a flat slot like a large flathead screw — looks symmetrical. It is not. The cam inside only moves usefully in two directions, and one of those directions tightens instead of releases.
If you rotate a cam lock that is already at maximum tension in the wrong direction, you are trying to over-tighten something that has no more travel. The cam grinds against the bolt head, the slot walls deform, and the internal plastic or soft-metal mechanism strips. This is where people get in trouble.
Once stripped, the cam lock cannot generate grip. You can still turn it — it will spin freely — but it will not hold anything together. The only fix is replacing the cam lock insert, which requires drilling it out and fitting a new one. On MDF, that repair often fails too.
How to release cam locks cleanly
- 1.Use a flathead screwdriver that fits the slot properly. A loose-fitting screwdriver slips and rounds the slot edges.
- 2.Apply light turning pressure — do not lean on it. If you need significant force, you are likely turning the wrong way.
- 3.Try counterclockwise first. Most IKEA cam locks release counterclockwise, but not all — some are reversed depending on orientation.
- 4.Feel for the release. There is a distinct reduction in resistance when the cam swings free of the bolt. You will feel it before you see it.
- 5.Do not over-rotate. Once the cam is free, stop turning. The bolt still needs to be pulled out of the insert.
Can cam locks be reused?
Yes — if you released them properly and they were not already worn. A cam lock that clicks cleanly into the locked position and holds without play is still functional. Test each one before reassembly by rotating it through its full range of motion and feeling for smooth, consistent movement.
Cam locks that feel loose, do not click, or spin freely without resistance should be replaced. IKEA sells spare hardware at most stores, or you can find compatible cam lock sets online.
